RAMESWARAM: DMK treasurer M K Stalin has
condemned the attacks on Tamil fishermen at the hands of the Sri Lankan navy
and urged the Centre to take measures to re-claim Katchatheevu from the island
nation.
Stalin, who was presiding over a
demonstration called by the Tamil Eelam Supporters' Organisation (Teso) on
Monday, also sought the Centre to deploy strong naval deployment in Rameswaram to prevent any attacks on the Indian fishermen.
Stalin said the attacks by the Sri
Lankan navy had become a routine affair where fishermen are attacked and their
fishing gears damaged and catches snatched away. DMK party's high command had
written letters to Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi in this regard, urging them
to come out with stronger measures, he said.
To protect the Tamil fishermen from the
attacks, Centre should claim the Katchatheevu islet from Sri Lanka and
naval bases should be created in Rameswaram and Dhanushkodi for the safety of
the fishermen. "The struggle for the cause will continue if the Centre
fails to take solid measures to put an end to the
attacks," Stalin said.
He also recalled that he had submitted
memorandums to the United Nations in this regard to safeguard Tamil fishermen and their livelihood. Former ministers, I
Periasamy, Periakaruppan, VCK leader, Thirumavalavan
and others participated in the demonstration.
