Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Police have aided a Sri Lankan fishing vessel in distress and rescued five of its crew members.
According to MNDF the Sri Lankan vessel was spotted by a Maldivian fishing boat near a uninhabited island in Lhaviyani Atoll in the early hours of Saturday morning. The vessel is now docked near the island.
MNDF further said the vessel was adrift after a faulty battery set had failed to start the engine. The vessel did not even have an anchor, MNDF added.
The vessel is believed to have left Sri Lanka 10 days ago, but all the crew members were in good health. MNDF said.
MNDF further said that the vessel had no catch at the time it was rescued.
A Sri Lankan fishing vessel had recently rescued eight people travelling on “Hivvaru” boat. Two of the ten people onboard that were found in a dingy by the Sri Lankan vessel after the boat capsized had died.
