MADURAI: Good news for people of Madurai
as Mihin Lanka, the domestic airlines of Sri Lanka, will be starting their first
operations from Madurai to Colombo on December 7. Senior officials from the
airlines who interacted with media here on Saturday said Mihin Lanka will make
its inaugural flight direct to Madurai on that date, making it the airlines'
ninth international destination. The airlines will start with three flights a
week to Colombo on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and there will be frequent
connecting flights from Madurai to the Middle Eastern destinations like
Bahrain, Dubai and Kuwait too. The officials also promised that there will be
convenient connections to Jakarta, Dhaka, Singapore, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur and many more international
destinations. Rohana Perera, head (commercial) of the airlines said they were
impressed with the enthusiasm and potential shown by associations and forums in
Madurai and did not hesitate to operate a flight to Madurai. However, there
were some delays due to lack of aircraft but now they have received aircraft
very recently to commence the service.
Perera also said there was a big demand
for flights to Tamil Nadu, especially for religious tourism. "The response
is good and many Tamil citizens in northern Lanka travel in huge numbers to
Sabarimala. There have been a lot of queries for bookings," he said.
